When you're living in an
Amsterdam houseboat in the very heart of this exciting city,
who needs to ride around to some other places? Use
those funny shaped things at the end of your legs to stroll
slowly from your Amsterdam woonboot in your new
neighborhood, enjoying the lovely architecture of the
buildings in the Jordaan, the Amsterdam hotels and cafes,
the ships and shops, and the people. "Relax your mind, relax
your mind, and you will live a long long time..." And also
come up with some new ideas that will make you rich,
rich,
rich!
But if you really need to go somewhere else, you can hop
from your Amsterdam houseboat to nearby Central Station
where the tram, bus, metro, train and boat lines
converge. There you can get maps and travel
information at the Information Center. (While you're
at it, pull out a passport size photo and buy a 3-day,
weekly or monthly Transportation Pass. Now you're a
real Amsterdammer!) Or rent a bike, as at Frederic's Bikes,
78 Brouwersgracht. (Lock your bike when leaving it parked !
)
The
convenient "Opstapper" bus line
stops when you ask them, at your doorstep on Prinsengracht.
The "Opstapper" is an experimental service -
comfortable minibuses run from Central Station along
Prinsengracht to Waterlooplein Marketplace and back. The
ride is free if you have a Transportation Pass; or you pay
one bus fare. They pick you up wherever you wave at them
along the route, and drop you off where you want. The
Municipality must be losing money on this line, but -
keep it a secret.
As for taxis, so far we've had
good experience with the TCA Taxis, at phone number
020 677 7777.
If you're living on
Prinsengracht and have a Transportation Pass, you can
use two tram stops that are closer than Central Station. One
is at
Nieuwezijds Kolk 150, East of your houseboat, and the
other is at Marnixplein 12, West of Noorderkerk
Marketplace along Westerstraat.
